THE PALACE OF THE GRAND DUKES OF LITHUANIA

THE PALACE OF THE GRAND DUKES OF LITHUANIA
21.02.2014

The Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, which is being reconstructed in Vilnius, embodies the entire course of Lithuanian history – from the beginning of statehood in the 13th century to the expansion of the Lithuanian Grand Duchy over the following centuries, its decline from the mid-17th century, loss of statehood at the end of the 18th century and the rebirth of modern Lithuania at the end of the 20th century. A part of the reconstructed palace has been transferred to the National Museum, currently offering two exhibition tour routes directly related to the historical functions of this residence. The first tour reveals the palace’s historical and architectural development by highlighting ancient ruins that are still in place, excavated artefacts, models and iconographic materials. The second tour takes visitors into the ceremonial halls, showcasing their grand interiors with historical pieces of furniture, tapestries, paintings, tile stoves and other exhibits. The palace is used not only as a museum with permanent international exhibitions and various educational and cultural events, but also as a unique venue for arranging conferences or meetings.
