It covers such topics as formation of amber, its characteristic forms and wide range of colours, amber inclusions, fossilised tree resins throughout the world and their deposits, as well as threads made of this material.

In July The economy and finance ministers from the 28 European Union countries gave the final green light to Latvia to join the eurozone on January 1, 2014

Latvia will soon follow Estonia into the euro area. Lithuania aims to join in 2015. In other words, all three Baltic States are now either inside, or well on their way to, the economic and political core of Europe. This is a tribute not only to the determined policy action that all three took in the wake of the financial crisis, but also to their remarkable economic and democratic transition since regaining independence in that dramatic summer of 1991,” Vice-President of the European Commission Olli Rehn said following the decision.

Taking place June 4-16, the Riga Opera Festival is dedicated to the 200th anniversary of Richard Wagner and his tetralogy „Der Ring des Nibelungen”. The first part of the cycle, „Das Rheingold” was created by famous director Stefan Harheim from Norway, and the next three parts, „Die Walküre", "Siegfried" and "Götterdämmerung" were staged by Viestur Kairish, one of the greatest Latvian opera, theatre and cinema directors. Wagner was the music director of the opera theatre in Riga, therefore the Latvian National Opera  is concidered to be as one of the leading houses of Wagner. This significant musical event of Latvia offers top quality performance and a chance to relive favorite scenes or see what was missed in an overview of the best moments of the previous year.

World Choir Games to bring record number of participants to Riga

The World Choir Games will be held in Riga next summer, bringing choirs from all over the world to Latvia for ten days.

The 2014 World Choir Games will run from July 9 to July 19. During this period, Riga will be visited by a total of 20,000 singers from seventy countries, which will compete in 29 different categories, the "Riga 2014" organization's head Diana Civle told a press conference today. During the World Choir Games, there will be concerts, master classes, seminars and a great deal of other events, so every person could find one or more that he or she would like to attend.

Riga releases program as Europe's Capital of Culture 2014

In an effort to drum up awareness for its turn at the international spotlight, the city of Riga has released details on its year-long calendar as Europe’s designated Capital of Culture next year which will include a human book chain made up of 25,000 people and a carnival of choirs. The programm will kick off with a celebration dedicated to the 500th anniversary of the printed book.

In January, for example, a human chain of 25,000 volunteers will transfer books, hand to hand, from the old to the new Latvian National Library, the Gaismas pils, which is still under construction.

The venue will also host an opera performance of "Rienzi" by Richard Wagner, who called the city home for two years.
