Helsinki starting up its lively and varied tourist summer

Helsinki starting up its lively and varied tourist summer
03.05.2013

The summer season of Helsinki tourism will begin at the start of May and last until the end of September. During the five summer months, the city will be visited by as many tourists as during the seven winter months combined. One of the biggest events of the season is also one of the biggest public events in the entire country; The Tall Ships Races 2013 Helsinki is expected to attract some half a million visitors.

The number of people staying in Helsinki’s accommodation establishments is expected to rise slightly from the last summer season. In addition, the city is expected to be visited by 283 international cruise liners and as many as 400,000 cruise passengers over the summer. If the expectations are met, this summer will be the best summer ever recorded for both accommodation establishments and the cruise liner industry. The convention season also promises to be hectic, with major international conventions mainly focusing on June. The biggest convention of the summer, the International Surgery Week 2013, will be held in the Helsinki Exhibition & Convention Centre in August and is expected to bring together as many as 3,000 industry professionals.

New experiences on both land and sea

This summer’s new destinations include the Finnish Nature Centre Haltia, which will open in May and is expected to raise considerable interest among international tourists as well. Haltia brings all of Finland’s nature within easy reach close to the capital and encourages people to experience nature tourism in a new way. The nature centre itself is also an architectural marvel, for it is the first public building of its size in Finland built entirely of wood.

A wealth of events throughout summer

The summer season starts off with an exciting sports event as the Ice Hockey World Championships will be played in Helsinki from the 3th to the 16th May.

The start of the season also offers the Ihana Helsinki (Wonderful Helsinki) city festival, which runs from the 16th to the 19th of May. After that, the city is taken over by popular community-based events, starting with the Restaurant Day on the 18th of May and followed by Siivouspäivä, the Cleaning Day, on the 25th of May.

One of the highlights of the summer includes the Helsinki Day on the 12th of June and the accompanying Helsinki week, which runs from the 7th to the 15th of June. The summer also offers numerous marketplace events, such as the Finnish Province Days feat, Northern Karelia, held at the Senate Square from the 13th to the 15th of June, and the Taste of Helsinki food event, held at Kansalaistori from the 13th to the 16th of June.
